Livelihoods Update: 18 October 2021

Samyukt Kisan Morcha is blocking railway track and rail traffic in India, primarily in Punjab and Haryana, between 10 AM and 4 PM today. They are protesting against the violence on farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

Chhattisgarh Government to create a Board to boost tea & coffee cultivation in the State, named “Chhattisgarh Tea Coffee Board”. Target of 10,000 acres under tea & coffee within the next 3 years.

Tuberculosis (TB) has made a resurgence in the world thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. India is at the worst end of it, followed by the Philippines and Indonesia. The biggest effect is that — in 2020, TB detection rates fell to 20% because of lack of access to tests and treatments: WHO report.

In the Global Hunger Index (GHI), which ranks countries on the basis of effects of nutrition in food and child mortality due to it, India has fallen 7 places to 101st in the 116 countries considered. Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan have done better than India.

Over 24 people have lost their lives in rain, floods and landslide events in 11 districts of Kerala since Saturday. Most of the victims belong to Kottayam and Idukki districts. NDRF teams deployed in the affected districts to do rescue and relief operations.
