Gurukulams let us go beyond text books. In mathematics, we tried Tulasi Ganitham, and Manickavachagam Pillai. And some advanced number theory, calculus, geometry et al. In science, it was Yakov Perelman’s books, Naraavataram (evolution), Viswadarshanam (universe). We could also try ‘Vijnaana Sarvasavam’ (Telugu) translated as Encyclopaedia. Ramayana, Mahabhaarata, Mahabhagavatam, Gita, Quraan, Bible, Kanyasulkam, Veyipadagalu, Mahaprsthanam, Balavyakaranam, Chivaraku Migiledi? et al. And a lot more books in Telugu, Telugu literature. There were also Telugu translations of Sanskrit and English books. Some easy to read English summaries/abstracts of popular titles. These include; Mother; To Kill a Mockingbird; 1984; Animal Farm; Romeo and Juliet; Pride and Prejudice; The Capital; War and Peace; The Diary of a Young Girl. Please note – we studied in Telugu medium in school and, only in intermediate, we moved into English medium. Reading, writing, logic, observations, pictures, reflection, meditation, yoga et al increased manifold post-school – increased variety, more non-fiction, more classics; reached one book a day minimum. Group reading came in. Started seeing the end, purpose in what we do. Clearly. Seeing no reason in separating work and purpose(s). Seeing for deeper, higher work. High standard, high quality. Profound. Life work, life-long work. Making a difference to the world, to all of us in this world. Uplifting our soul, setting us free, and liberating us.
In the next five years in the Social Impact space, we can see many changes including: Rise of one-person dominant NGOs, philanthropic efforts, businesses, political fronts, etc. This would mean reduced red tape, bureaucracy, improved efficiencies and effectiveness. Participatory processes with authoritarian governance hand-in-hand; business persons and professionals, after getting some wealth, would go into philanthropy; mostly taking up the projects themselves; development indicators pursued would change in a big way; big data, AI would take charge, and bring in more transparency, more analytics, more accountability at higher levels – hope it helps the people too; may be heading towards free intelligence, with new roles for us human beings; Social impact reporting would become mandatory; marginalized would catch up on the new tools, skills, knowledge faster than we see today; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) would be pursued more, demands for DEI would be louder and more persistent; carbon markets blend in o merge into more hybrid impact credits/markets, and they grow in a big way.
Do we tend to become more end, purpose focused? Can this be the compass for us? Can we front-end purpose and values to check every plan, activity plan to be screened with? Can we name the purpose, value advocates, and charge with this mandate? Can we get more authenticity, transparency, and accountability vis-à-vis purpose and values? Can we have quantified specific, measurable metrics for these? Can we have more of authentic storytelling to inspire positive actions? Can we find ways to increase the speed, doing more quickly, more people joining the effort without losing time? Can we find scale leaders, force multipliers for change? No overhead forces? Can we be available free, open, at least for some 300 hours/36 days a year, a day in a week, an hour a day?
