Friend. Friendship. A relationship of mutual affection. By choice. Stronger than acquaintance, association. A friend is more than a classmate, neighbour, coworker, colleague. Friendship includes being together, enjoying time together, supporting one another. Friends may not be family; friends may not be love/ lovers. Friendship teaches us social skills including empathy, openness, sharing. Sharing resources, secrets. Most of us have at least two close friends. Friendships seek and become – more giving, sharing, frank, supportive, and spontaneous. Interestingly it is said: friendships formed during post-secondary education last longer than friendships formed earlier. Adulthood friendship provides company, affection, and emotional support, contributing to better mental well-being, physical health. It appears – highest levels of happiness and general wellbeing are linked to strong, close ties to numerous friends. Most friendships meet tacit expectations in six areas: positive regard – genuine liking with no pretensions; self-disclosure – without feeling insecure; help in in practical ways; similar, reinforcing worldviews, life experiences; spending time together; agency – sharing valuable information, skills, or resources. Higher friendship quality directly contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence, and social development. People with close friendships are happier. Having more close friends, at least up to 5, and friends limitless improves mental health and cognitive ability.
