Elders, Elderly, Senior Citizens, Seniors, Old persons, above 60. 10%+ today and it is increasing. India is greying, with increasing average age. Elders’ helpline 14567. However, the preparation for living as senior citizens, generally we need to start at 50. Eldercare organizations start the work with 55+ persons. At 60, life expectancy is 79 years. Women live longer, by at least 2-3 years. Also, the retirement age is going up. 58-62 for professional HR in Governments et al; 65-68 years for academics and judiciary; 70-75 years for political establishment; some are lifeworkers, who may not retire at all, but may slow down. The pension may be offered from 60 itself. Generally, 50-60 is considered pre-old; 60-70 – young old; 70-80 – middle old; 80+ old old. Other way to put – active, assisted, dependent. Five dimensions of ageing – chronological, biological, psychological, social, and developmental.
Basic marks of old age that affect both body and mind are – slowness of behaviour; bone and joint problems; losing height; chronic conditions like uncontrolled hypertension, arthritis, heart disease, mucus hypersecretion, dental problems with having less saliva, digestion issues, essential tremor, eyesight deterioration, falls, slower walk, hearing loss, decreased stamina, mobility loss, reduced lung expansion, rheumatological-musculoskeletal-related-malignant pains; less elastic drier more lined and wrinkled skin; increased wound heal time; trouble sleeping, daytime sleepiness; diminishing taste buds; decreased thirst perception; urinary incontinence; weakened, slow vibration vocal cords; frailty and disability. Mental marks include: agreeability; caution; fear; loneliness; dependence; depressed mood; reduced mental, cognitive ability; memory loss; tending towards dementia, Alzheimer’s; stubbornness; repeating themselves et al.
Agility gives way to frailty. Frailty markers include; loss of any notion of invincibility; loss of ability to do things essential to one’s care; loss of possibility for a subsequent life stage. In addition to everyday care, frail people are particularly vulnerable during natural disasters. In the final year to death, they seem/feel – constant fatigue, much sleep, detachment from people, things, and activities, simplified life.
Interestingly, all of us do not age, not even approximately, in equal measure. Our ageing timelines are different. Ageing across five dimensions vary. From dimension to dimension. Active to dependent. Physical to mental. Emotional to social, and spiritual. Being useful more than earlier.
Can we become less busy, reduce long hours? Can we reduce, skip, and escape stress? Can we reward results, outcomes, and quality? Can we value genius, talent, intelligence, perceptiveness, interconnect, efficiency, and smartness? The silent, invisible, effective workers? Can this be felt, seen, and experienced? Can we reflect, learn, live, lead, mentor, and inspire this? Can we do this in more teams? Can we scale this?
Yes, we can. If we coexist, flowing. Caring for ourselves, our teams. In N? vyaaptiyoga for 7L.
