Human rights. Universally recognized standards of human behaviour. Inherent and inalienable. To every individual. Civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights including right to life, freedom of expression, protection against enslavement, right to education. To protect, setting a global standard for human dignity, freedom, and justice. All of us are created equal to have rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family and this recognition forms the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. Maybe, these human rights go with human obligations, absolute and universal.
Child. A person up to 18. Every child is born with the same inalienable right to a healthy start in life, an education, and a safe, secure childhood – all the basic opportunities that translate into a productive and prosperous adulthood. Many children are denied, deprived of these rights. Maybe – because of their place of birth or their family of origin; because of their race, ethnicity, or gender; or because they live in poverty or with a disability. UNICEF – United Nations Children’s Fund – focuses on advancing the rights of every child and meeting the evolving needs of the whole child, including health and education. UNICEF received the Nobel Peace Prize for the Promotion of brotherhood among nations. Children’s rights include protection from violence. Yet, still one billion children experience some form of emotional, physical or sexual violence every year; and one child dies from violence every seven minutes. Children exposed to violence live in isolation, loneliness and fear, not knowing where to turn for help, especially when the perpetrator is someone close.
Many school-aged children are out of school. Children, one in five, are married off. Many a child is engaged in child labour, and more than half of them in hazardous work. Can we do something to reduce these vast inequities and dangers? Can we have all our children in schools, with decent quality education? Can we have child labour abolished entirely? Can we have healthy children? Can we have care for 1000 days? Can we care, can we be there for children?
