Iran attacked. US and Israel attacked Iran for establishing ‘new and free Iran’, for ‘security, peace, progress and prosperity’. War has begun in the Middle East. 12-day War in 2025 to prevent Iran making nuclear weapons, and this is a sequel to that. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, is no longer alive. His son-in-law, daughter-in-law also have their lives. The Defence Minister succumbed. ~50 Iranian leaders succumbed. Hundreds of Iranians are dying. Khamenei succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 and was at the helm for 36/37 years now. A leadership council made up of the president, the judiciary chief, and a jurist from the Guardian Council will temporarily assume the duties of Iran’s supreme leader. Alireza Arafi assumed leadership of the leadership council. Incidentally, he is also no longer alive now. Meanwhile, Iran responded with counter attacks on Israel, American military bases and embassies across West Asia, civilian and energy facilities in neighbouring countries etc.
Succession in Iran may be a tortuous process. Khamenei’s second-eldest son, Mojtaba Khamenei; Ruhollah Khomeini’s grandson Hassan Khomeini; Iran’s reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian; judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei et al may be in consideration for becoming the supreme leader. On the other hand, there are campaigns for democracy. Maryam Rajavi, Reza Pahlavi are leading some of these campaigns. Will they succeed to ‘step-in’, in this transition time? Will Iran, Israel, US reconcile very quickly or are we headed for a long haul? Increased casualties, tensions, and oil crises all across.
Can philanthropies, CSRs fund complementary support? Say system change, scaling systems-architecture-advocacy, rather than projects; scaling architecture, rather than project cycles, annual cycles? Why cannot they fund leadership, tech, data, governance, sustainability? Can we battle and transcend founder-dependent organisations, strengthen second lines, improve data systems, augment risk appetite, engage communities and governments? Can we be partners of core systems change? In multiple dimensions, multiple layers.
Can the funding happen to the capacity? To the institutions? Proof of concepts, idea testing, pilots, proof of scaling-up; Research, evidence, data, knowledge; leadership, governance, systems, coalitions, strategy, culture, tech; raising funds, talent, partners and resources; planning, supporting, tracking; scaling deep, out. Rather than activities of reach, just reach out.
Let us not chase scale, let scale chase us. Let us not court partners, let partners court us. Let us show, demonstrate, build evidence, and pilot. Let us build models, customizable, replicable, scalable. Let us have exemplars, champions, multipliers, leaders, mentors, pedagogy/andragogy, curriculums, modules-tools-material. Let us have systems within (including finance, people and performance management) and without development. Let us have nested institutions. Let us seed, be available, be accessible. With empowered leadership, leadership team(s). With sourced, pooled up corpus. With core dedicated high-end team(s) and agency in all areas that matter.
