Civil defence, civil protection. Assisting in civil natural, technological, nuclear-radiological-biological-chemical, social emergencies such as flood, earthquake, civil disorder, wars, etc. It includes homeland/internal security, all hazards. For recovery, speeding up recovery; preventing deaths, sufferings by hunger, cold, disease, etc. It is important for people to feel less helpless, and in control of their own destinies. Civil defence works towards this. Police, Fire, Heath, Army, Intelligence et al working in tandem. Is India’s Civil defence appropriate, adequate?

Social – Development, Livelihoods – Sector in general and for Poor-vulnerable-marginalized in particular have reached VUCA – volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous – a new normal. Disruption; new ways, tools of working, living, communicating; unsettledness; disagreements inside, outside, within and without; suddenness in uncertainties; with no clues many a time despite bundles of data, information around. Is democracy becoming a burden increasingly? Are new social sector leaders, so many of them, or so many of us, taking on unusual amounts, varying kinds of loads? Without clarity on ways forward. It is not clear how we are able to bear these. Our resilience under these circumstances is trying. We need to be proud of all of us. For responding to these challenges in our ways. For finding our footing. For charting paths forward. We are lucky there is some guidance from our extraordinary senior leaders. Maybe quietly. In non-flashy ways. Through conversations, journeys, examples-models, trials and trails. Let us be grateful. Let us engage with them. Let us be kind, generous, and graceful. Let us give them care and support. Let us learn to be them, tailored, adapted to now times.

Advancement is unparalleled. Divides are stark. Socially, economically. Our lives are shaped by these contradictions and their play. Our ladders and snakes. Our futures, destinies. Our privileges and deprivations. Many of us are not in absolute poverty. 10% are in extreme poverty. 1% holds 50% of world’s prosperity; 10% holds 80%. Is our life a series of accidents, and generosity from others, or the other way round. Can we not make the base same for all when born, till they become adults? Through structural systems changes, high-end philanthropy, progressive taxation, access to schooling/ education, healthcare, strong social protection and living stipends, fair wages et al. Multiple sources with dignity. Meeting our needs, relying on ourselves. Inclusion, equity, and justice always. More than business, self-nurturing enterprises, lives, and communities. Can we be one – bundle of humanity, bundle of lives, bound together, by collective coexistence, co-journeying? Guided by collective intelligence, competence and genuine shared values of our lives? Owned by us, all of us.

Can we realize and appreciate that we need to survive our full life, and usefully? Survival needs boundaries. Taking help and support. Remain ‘unburnt’. Changing activities, conversations, and journeys. Taking breaks, and a long break once in a quarter, six months, a year or two.  This rest is not a luxury, reward. It is a necessity, need. It is reflection time. Time for more perspectives. Visioning time. Retreat and recouping time. Can we, then, test and choose our ways, nurture our teams, build our plans, action portfolios, and partner forums? Can we live, lead, and learn in tandem?

Yes, we can. If we coexist, flowing. Breaking, making choices. In N? santhi-prasanthiyoga for 7L.
