Our human-made systems treat everything including very life-support systems as the subsidiary of the global economy. It is obvious that we are living a lie, when we see that we are kept alive by a ‘paper thin layer’ of atmosphere – says Ron Garan. Garan spent 178 days in space and accumulated more than 100 million kilometres in 2842 orbits of Earth. He was experiencing the ‘Overview Effect’. The perspective realized is that we are intricately, deeply interconnected. If we embrace our universe’s true multi-dimensional reality, we live our lives differently, to meet the collective needs of the world. We think planet, society first. We are confronted with; things that took five billion years to evolve, and are ’disappearing’ because of our interference. Can we stop, can we reverse, and facilitate ‘natural’ evolution?
Woman. XX. ♀. Better half. Lives longer. Life expectancy at birth is higher. Some 6-8 years. Because of biological advantages. Her stamina is higher. Her emotional sensitivity is superior. Her multi-tasking ability is far superior. Better nurturer, protector. Better skilled. If she has her agency: on her body, diet, family, health, home, group, village, bazaar, and government, she can take charge of her identity, solidarity, capacity, rights-entitlements, wellbeing, and freedom. Then, the world would be a better place. It is already happening. More needs to happen. Gender roles are changing. She is going beyond homemaker responsibilities, some of these are being shared by her man. Education is better for her. She is excelling in general. Even in STEM areas. Still higher level positions/jobs elude her. Pay is not commensurate, in many a place, level. Discouragement in family, in many families, persists. Political, job, and educational reservations are helping. Literacy levels are levelling up. Education levels are going up steadily. In higher education, majority are women, in many institutes. Still to achieve majority in high-end employment, entrepreneurship. In many positions, it is still a single digit%. Artists are also increasing. Women in political positions at higher levels are still a small proportion, less than 25%. However, suffrage (voting) seems to be universal across the world now. Gender-based violence at family, community/society and state levels is still not less. Extended families are giving way to more nuclear families. Non-marital fertility is on the rise. Single women are increasing. Working mothers are on the rise. Abortions, unsafe abortions persist, increase.
International Women’s Days (of struggle), overtime, have been calling for equal pay, equal economic opportunity, equal legal rights, reproductive rights, subsidized child care, prevention of violence against women et al. Now, this day has become a day of celebration. Its theme this year is: For All Women and Girls – Rights. Equality. Empowerment.
