Liberal Arts earlier were referred to: grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. Isn’t it – every one of us should be reasonably good at these liberal arts, whatever profession we pursue later?
Art is a work of creativity, beauty. That evokes emotions. That depicts reality and possibilities. That displays proficiency. That shows concepts and ideas. They include Artisan’s art; craftsperson’s craft; skilled worker’s skill, finesse; and artist’s expressions. Representing reality, narrating history or projection to tell a story, visualizing, expressing, communicating emotion et al. Art stimulates: thoughts, emotions, beliefs, or ideas through the senses. The purposes could be beyond pure creativity and self-expression. To communicate ideas politically, spiritually, and philosophically; to create a sense of beauty; to explore perception, nature of perception; for pleasure; or to generate strong emotions. May be real, not-so-real, or imaginary purposes. Art could be basic human instinct for harmony, beauty, balance, and rhythm – being human beyond utility; imitation in harmony; experience in relation to the larger universe – mysterious; imagination not tied to formal structures, patterns; rituals, symbolic, or cultural traditions. Art could be for motivated purposes, may be for change – communication; entertainment; avant-garde, graffiti, cartoons, and street art – social, political, and behavioural change, including propaganda, advertising, and commercial; free zone for research, experimentation; psychological, therapy and healing; charming, attracting, fitness et al.
Creative arts are distinguishable by media, genre, styles, and forms. Art form’s composition may include aspects: colour, contour, dimension, medium, melody, space, texture, or value. Design principles may encompass: arrangement, balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, proportion, proximity, rhythm et al. Art products, processes could come under Intellectual Property, copyrights domain. Open, creative commons is offering ‘use’, improve, modify, reproduce, distribute, and display with acknowledgement and no, or token royalty.
All humans are artists. Of the art of living, livelihoods, leading, learning, and loving; of intelligence and genius of being useful, relevant; of relationships, coexistence; of mentoring; of aesthetics; of culture, cultural heritage; of being human. Some with finesse, mastery. Some are in apprenticeship. Probably, artificial intelligence, large language models can help in all this. Can we build, nurture our portfolio of arts, practice the portfolio, mentor the new artists, NextGen artists? Useful, relevant. With the purpose of being human. Can these arts be mandatory part of the growing up education curriculums? Can we have public art clubs, schools everywhere?
